Woodland Volunteers Wanted
Volunteers are needed to work on an exciting new woodland project, part of a wider campaign to celebrate the time spent in Porlock by the pioneer of modern computing, Ada Lovelace.
In the 1830s and 1840s, Ada spent her summer months each year at Ashley Combe, above Porlock Weir. Whilst here, continuing her scientific work, she and her husband also developed one of the South West’s first arboretums in the woods towards Culbone.
Supported by the landowners, the Exmoor National Park Authority, we are looking to recruit a small band of volunteers to start simple woodland clearances, to help rediscover the historic landscape that Ada helped to create.
Tools and training will be provided. A moderate level of fitness is required, as the site is accessible only by foot and involves some work on sloping ground. We hope to start during the first week of February, and meet (maybe monthly) thereafter.
